India’s food safety regulator, FSSAI, has sought an explanation from quick-commerce platform Blinkit after customers complained about poor-quality eggs allegedly sold online. The complaints, some shared on social media, mentioned issues such as foul smell and rubbery texture, prompting FSSAI to take suo-moto notice and ask Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd to submit a detailed action-taken report within a week. The regulator has also reminded e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms that they are responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of food products sold through their services. The matter has brought fresh attention to how eggs are stored, transported, and delivered as more consumers depend on online grocery apps for daily essentials. FSSAI has advised that eggs can stay fresh for around 10 to 12 days after being laid when stored at about 28±2°C, but their shelf life may drop in hotter conditions. It also recommends keeping eggs in dedicated refrigerator shelves or egg trays and buying them from sellers that store them in cool, covered, and well-ventilated spaces. Eggs remain a popular food because they are rich in protein and key nutrients, but the latest complaints show why freshness checks, safe handling, and proper storage are vital for consumer health.
