Late Maitland-Niles Wonder Goal Salvages Draw for Everton Against Manchester United
By Andy Hunter

Everton secured a dramatic point against Manchester United on Sunday, with debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles scoring a stunning 25-yard equalizer in the final kick of the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The goal, coming just 19 minutes into his Everton career, capped a difficult week for the club following its turbulent transfer window activities. Manchester United appeared to have secured victory when Benjamin Sesko headed home in the 88th minute, marking the second consecutive season he has scored against Everton at this venue. However, David Moyes's side refused to accept defeat, with Maitland-Niles firing a first-time shot past goalkeeper Senne Lammens after Bryan Mbeumo's defensive challenge fell to him five minutes into stoppage time. United manager Michael Carrick appeared stunned by the late equalizer despite his team twice taking the lead through moments of quality play. Following the match, Carrick defended his side's season start, stating, "We haven't started that badly. It's not a bad start." The match had been goalless at halftime despite United dominating possession and creating the better chances. Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar early on from a Mbeumo knockdown, while Matheus Cunha wasted a clear opportunity by shooting over the bar. Everton's best first-half chance came when Thierno Barry headed over from close range after a fine cross from right-back Merlin Röhl, who started ahead of new signing Maitland-Niles. United broke the deadlock just 62 seconds into the second half when Mbeumo received a pass from Kobbie Mainoo and drove through unchallenged before finishing past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Everton equalized in the 83rd minute when substitute Hayden Hackney set up Tyrique George, who curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner from a tight angle. United retook the lead through Sesko's header from Luke Shaw's cross, following a move started by Fernandes, before Maitland-Niles' late intervention salvaged a point for the home side. The match took place amid tension between Everton supporters and the club's ownership, the Friedkin Group, following a chaotic close to the transfer window. The supporters group The 1878s withdrew its usual matchday displays, and some fans organized a "not a pound in the ground" protest, though no visible demonstrations occurred inside the stadium. Rishi Majithia, son-in-law of owner Dan Friedkin and the club's day-to-day representative, was the only ownership figure present. Maitland-Niles joined Everton on transfer deadline day for £4.3 million from Lyon, brought in as a potential long-term successor to Séamus Coleman at right-back.
