Delhi Beefs Up Security Ahead of BRICS Summit Amid Warnings of China, Russia-Linked Protests

Delhi Police and central security agencies have stepped up vigilance across the national capital ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit, following alerts from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) about possible attempts to disrupt VVIP movement, breach security arrangements, or create disturbances, top IB sources told ANI.
The security inputs have flagged potential threats such as graffiti, drone activity, and attempts to intrude onto VVIP routes. In response, agencies have strengthened surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts across sensitive areas of the city.
The threat assessment is based on country- and issue-specific inputs. Officials are concerned that disputes involving participating countries could be exploited to organize protests or cause disruptions during the summit. Sources cited by ANI said China-related Tibetan protests and issues concerning Russia are among the factors being considered as part of the security review. Khalistan-related threats have also been flagged, with agencies periodically receiving emails and other inputs on the matter.
Security agencies are closely monitoring social media platforms and digital communication channels for protest calls, mobilization efforts, provocative content, and signs of planned graffiti or other disruptive activities. Surveillance has been intensified around summit venues, hotels likely to house delegates, VVIP routes, key installations, and major transportation hubs, including the New Delhi Railway Station, where operational changes such as train cancellations or diversions may occur during the summit.
Delhi Police and central security and intelligence agencies are maintaining real-time coordination and information sharing to identify potential threats and prevent any attempt to disrupt the high-profile event.
India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, marking the country's fourth Chairship of BRICS in 2026. India's Chairship theme, "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," emphasizes strengthening existing achievements and institutional effectiveness while placing development, sustainability, and innovation at the center of the agenda. The theme also underscores the aspirations of the Global South, with India seeking to position BRICS as a constructive and solutions-oriented forum.
