Manchester City opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Porto, thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland, in Enzo Maresca's first European match as the club's manager.

City dominated territory for much of the first half in Portugal but struggled to convert their chances, with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa denying Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden on several occasions. Haaland missed a number of opportunities before the break, but proved decisive after halftime, heading home just two minutes into the second half before adding a composed finish inside the box during stoppage time to seal the win.

Maresca may not have been fully satisfied with his team's performance, which lacked sharpness in key moments, but the manager secured a winning start to City's Champions League campaign.

Despite a summer overhaul that saw City make nine signings, only two of those new arrivals, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández, started the match. City invested $436 million in midfield reinforcements, and Maresca is still experimenting with the best setup. Elliot Anderson, who impressed in recent appearances, was benched, giving Bouaddi and Fernández the chance to start.

Bouaddi, making his first start for City, showed composure beyond his 18 years, completing 98% of his passes and making five defensive contributions while regularly escaping Porto's press. Fernández also impressed, contributing energetically in midfield and recording his first goal involvement of the season with an assist. While City's midfield remains a work in progress, it was one of the strongest aspects of an otherwise underwhelming team performance.

In defense, Marc Guéhi and Rúben Dias were composed and largely untroubled by Porto's attack, though Joško Gvardiol had a difficult time against William Gomes and was booked before being substituted early in the second half. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had a solid, if occasionally nervy, outing, and did not need to make a single save all match.

Haaland's performance, while not his most clinical, was enough to make him City's third all-time leading scorer, with his header and composed finish moving him closer to the club's record set by Sergio Agüero, who remains 93 goals ahead.

City's attack, including Antoine Semenyo and Cherki, was at times wasteful, with several promising opportunities squandered. Despite this, City recorded 2.29 expected goals, 10 shots on target, and five big chances, while restricting Porto to just 0.22 expected goals over the match.

Substitutes including Abdukodir Khusanov, Elliot Anderson, Iliman Ndiaye, Mateo Kovačić, and Rayan Aït-Nouri all featured in the second half, with Aït-Nouri providing the assist for Haaland's second goal.

Overall, while City's performance was not their most convincing, the win keeps their Champions League campaign on track, with Haaland once again proving crucial to their success.
