Anwar Urges Tougher ASEAN Haze Measures as Sarawak Air Quality Turns Hazardous Again

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger cooperation among ASEAN nations to address the recurring problem of transboundary haze, saying existing regional mechanisms need to be reviewed given the toll air pollution takes on public health.

Anwar stated that Malaysia would not shield its own companies if Indonesian authorities determine they are responsible for starting fires linked to the haze.

The renewed call comes as air quality in Serian, a town in Sarawak, deteriorated back to hazardous levels just one day after local authorities lifted an emergency declaration. The Air Pollutant Index in the area climbed to 305 on Tuesday morning.

The worsening conditions have disrupted daily life across Sarawak, forcing school closures, affecting businesses and leading to the cancellation or postponement of outdoor events.
