New Delhi – The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released draft norms for root canal filling materials and sealers, aiming to standardise sizes, improve X‑ray visibility and introduce a common colour‑coding and labelling system. The proposals, presented by two government officials, seek to reduce variation between manufacturers and aid dentists in selecting and verifying the correct product during treatment.

The new standards require materials to be clearly visible on X‑rays, with specified radiopacity, and to carry standardized numerical and colour codes to differentiate product sizes. They also set requirements for product marking, labelling, packaging and instructions for use, ensuring manufacturers provide consistent information.

The draft covers sealers for conventional root‑canal procedures and other dental treatments such as apexification, perforation filling, resorption treatment and retrograde root‑end filling.

"Root canal treatment requires precision, and the materials used to fill and seal the canals play an important role," said Dr Pawan Kumar, dentist and director of Delhi‑based DentMarc Dental Clinic. "Standardising their dimensions, radiopacity and identification systems can help dentists select the appropriate materials and assess their placement through dental X‑rays."

Kumar added that clearer specifications and better manufacturer instructions could reduce confusion when working with different materials, though a good result still depends on the dentist’s expertise and the overall treatment.

The move follows evidence of product inconsistencies on the market. A 2025 study of four root‑canal sealers found substantial differences in flow, X‑ray visibility and solubility, with some products failing to meet relevant international ISO standards. India’s market for root‑canal filling and sealing materials was valued at $24.48 million in 2025, underscoring the importance of common quality standards in this area of dental care.

Queries sent to the spokesperson of the consumer affairs ministry remain unanswered.

Frequently asked questions

What do the BIS draft standards require for root canal filling materials?

The standards require materials to be clearly visible on X‑rays with specified radiopacity, standardized numerical and colour codes, and include product marking, labeling, packaging, and instructions for use.

Which dental procedures are covered by the draft standards?

The draft covers sealers for conventional root‑canal procedures and other treatments such as apexification, perforation filling, resorption treatment, and retrograde root‑end filling.

What did the 2025 study find about root‑canal sealers?

The study of four sealers found substantial differences in flow, X‑ray visibility, and solubility, with some products failing to meet ISO standards.
