Krakow Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Suspect Injured and Taken to Hospital

A gunman who killed six people in Krakow’s historic Old Town on Saturday is believed to be a domestic far‑right extremist, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said. The 24‑year‑old Polish national, whose name has not been released, was wounded during a gunfight with police near the Main Market Square and was transported to a hospital for surgery. Authorities say he drove onto the square in a car, opened fire with an automatic rifle at what appeared to be random targets, and was later found on a sidewalk wearing military gear, a bullet‑proof vest and a rifle. The attack left four women and two men dead and injured 16 others, according to regional police. Three police officers were also wounded, one of whom is in critical condition. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz described the incident as an act of terrorism. The suspect had a firearm licence, and his vehicle contained ammunition and other guns that likely belong to his family. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police are investigating all aspects of the attack, while President Karol Nawrocki said he is in contact with the authorities and expects a full explanation. Krakow, a city of about 800,000 people located roughly 250 km south of Warsaw, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its medieval architecture and is a popular tourist destination.
