VisionQuest: Essential MCU Context for New Disney+ Series
By Jeff Spry

Marvel Studios’ new series VisionQuest, now streaming on Disney+, follows the complex life of Vision, played by Paul Bettany. The show’s narrative is rooted in the events of 2021’s WandaVision and 2024’s Agatha All Along, which Marvel has described as the final chapters of a trilogy. To understand VisionQuest, viewers need to be familiar with key moments from several MCU titles.
Key MCU works to watch before VisionQuest include: - Avengers: Age of Ultron - Avengers: Infinity War - WandaVision - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Agatha All Along (optional, as it continues Wanda’s story but is not essential for VisionQuest’s plot)
The story begins in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos kills Vision by removing his Mind Stone. Vision’s death leaves Wanda Maximoff devastated. In WandaVision, two versions of Vision appear: White Vision, a synthezoid created by S.W.O.R.D., and Hex Vision, a supernatural form conjured by Wanda’s magic. The two merge at the series’ end, leaving Vision with a body that contains memories of both.
Vision’s mind hosts several AI personalities. J.A.R.V.I.S., derived from Tony Stark’s assistant, and E.D.I.T.H., another Stark AI, appear as distinct entities. Ultron’s code, which Vision absorbed in Age of Ultron, also resides in his skull.
The series centers on Vision’s relationship with his son Tommy Maximoff, created by Wanda’s hex. Tommy and his brother Billy were thought lost after WandaVision but were resurrected in Agatha All Along by merging their consciousnesses with two teenage boys.
VisionQuest introduces new antagonists: Paladin, a mercenary from the comics, and Jocasta, a character linked to Ultron. These villains add tension to Vision’s quest for meaning.
Created by Terry Matalas, VisionQuest airs two new episodes each Tuesday on Disney+. The cast includes Ruaridh Mollica, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy.
