Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The attack, which followed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s warning of new strikes on energy targets, bridges and other infrastructure, caused debris to damage a five‑storey apartment building in a western district and the façade of another residential building. The city’s military administration reported that two people were injured and a building housing a kindergarten was damaged. Klitschko posted on Telegram that explosions were occurring in the suburbs and that the enemy was targeting infrastructure with ballistic missiles. The incident comes as Zelenskyy’s government seeks guarantees from Western allies on post‑war security support. Discussions in Brussels earlier this week covered post‑war reconstruction, funding for next year and security guarantees, involving officials from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the European Union, the World Bank and the US investment group BlackRock. Ukrainian lead negotiator Rustem Umerov noted the meetings in an online post. The missile attack occurred three days before US‑led Ukrainian‑Russian talks were scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi, which aim to resolve the conflict that has lasted more than four years. The last such talks took place in February. On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said a deal between Russia and Ukraine may be imminent after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, at the White House. Trump did not meet the Ukrainian delegation that day. The same day, First Lady Melania Trump hosted a diplomatic gathering with Russian and Ukrainian representatives to build on a localised truce she helped broker in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky in October. The truce expired last Sunday, a day before a Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhia region. Ukraine’s Emergency Service reported the death toll from the attack has risen to 50, making it one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.
