Kerala High Court Calls for Investigation into DGP Thachankary’s Jail Hospitalisation

The Kerala High Court has ordered a thorough examination of former Director General of Police Tomin Thachankary’s hospitalisation while he was imprisoned in the disproportionate assets case. Justice A. Badharudeen requested Thachankary’s medical records from the Poojappura Central Jail Superintendent as he considered a petition to modify the bail condition that barred him from international travel. Thachankary told the court that he works in the United Arab Emirates and would lose his livelihood if he could not return to work soon. The judge remarked that Thachankary had “10,000 ailments while in jail but was fit for a job outside the country as soon as he was released,” noting a “severe contradiction.” He added that the court would not hesitate to cancel the bail if necessary. The court was informed that Thachankary was transferred to the Central Prison on September 17 and remained in the prison hospital block continuously until his release on bail on October 15. His clinical history shows coronary artery disease and a coronary artery bypass graft in 2009. He also has obstructive sleep apnoea, has been on continuous positive airway pressure ventilation for three years, and has been treated for psoriasis. The court said a detailed hearing is required to determine whether the hospitalisation was genuine or a tactic to avoid staying in a jail cell, in line with his claim that he is capable of working abroad despite his illness.
