Trae Young Faces Former Hawks in Atlanta as Wizards Seek Redemption
The Washington Wizards will play the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. ET in an NBA Cup group‑stage game. Trae Young will appear in his first game back in Atlanta as a member of the opposing team after his trade to Washington last season. Washington is looking to rebound from a 120‑105 loss on Wednesday, in which they struggled with deep shooting.
Atlanta will be without a key frontcourt player, as Jalen Johnson is listed as questionable after a left ankle sprain. Washington also has Anthony Davis questionable with a right ankle sprain sustained in the first quarter of their last game.
Young is the Hawks’ all‑time leader in assists and three‑pointers made and ranks sixth in franchise scoring. His return to State Farm Arena adds emotional weight to a matchup where Washington must tighten its defense.
In the first game, the Hawks hit 19 three‑pointers while Washington made six. Atlanta averages about 15 made threes per game, compared with Washington’s nine. Washington needs to improve defensive rotations, limit second‑chance points, and box out better to win.
Injury updates: Johnson is questionable after a left ankle sprain; he missed the last two games and recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in his most recent outing. Asa Newell is out with a left great‑toe hyperextension. Jock Landale, Mouhamed Gueye, Henri Veesaar, Keshon Gilbert, RayJ Dennis, and Jalen Wilson are also questionable or out.
Washington’s Anthony Davis, who sprained his right ankle in the first quarter of the last game, played through the injury, scoring 26 points on 12‑for‑19 shooting.
Key adjustments for Washington include stopping the Hawks from grabbing offensive rebounds—Atlanta had 19 in the first game—and ensuring players like AJ Dybantsa and Kyshawn George prioritize boxing out. The team also needs to use Young to control the pace and create easier shots for teammates.
Both teams are vying for the top spot in the Southeast Division. A win for Washington would help them regain the number‑one position they briefly held before the Wednesday loss.
Game details: Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. ET, State Farm Arena, Atlanta, GA. TV: Monumental Sports Network. Radio: The Team 980 AM, 106.7‑2 FM.
