Everton Beat Coventry 3-1 as VAR Decisions Spark Controversy
By Sam Blitz

Everton won 3-1 at Coventry on 6 November 2026, with Thierno Barry scoring twice and providing an assist. Barry’s first goal came from a header after a cross by Kiernan Dewsbury‑Hall, and his second, a similar back‑post header, was contested by Coventry for a handball, but VAR found no conclusive evidence. Dewsbury‑Hall finished the scoreline with a goal from a tight angle after a pass from Barry.
The match was marked by three significant VAR incidents that worked against Coventry. In the first half, James Tarkowski was cleared of a hair‑pull on Caleb Yirenkyi in the penalty area, and a second incident involving Taiwo Awoniyi was ruled a foul outside the box. After the break, Awoniyi’s challenge on Vitalii Mykolenko was deemed a foul but not a penalty.
Frank Lampard, Coventry’s head coach, criticised the VAR decisions, saying the hair‑pull should have been a penalty and that the Awoniyi incident was a clear foul that should have resulted in a penalty. He also expressed frustration over Barry’s second goal, which he claimed involved a handball.
Everton’s manager David Moyes acknowledged the impact of the decisions but emphasised the importance of the result for the club’s position in the league. He noted that the team had performed well enough to secure three points.
The match took place at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Everton’s victory moving them into fifth place in the Premier League table, ahead of Liverpool for 48 hours. Coventry remain two points above the relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three by the weekend’s end.
