Villa Lose 3-0 to Barcelona, Emery Sees Learning Opportunity

Aston Villa were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Tuesday, ending their perfect start to the Champions League with three wins. The match, played in heavy rain, saw Villa take the lead with a goal from Lamine Yamal after a mistake by Joao Gomes, but Raphinha scored twice in the second half to seal the result.
Emery, who celebrated his 55th birthday earlier in the week, said the defeat gave the team a chance to assess their progress. "We are working for years together and we made mistakes like that but we have always overcome those mistakes," he said. "It is giving me a lot of information to analyse and compete at this level."
Villa had entered the match with victories over Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking, but the game proved to be their toughest test. Emery noted that the team had matched Barcelona in the first half and could have taken the lead if not for the error that led to Yamal’s opener and poor finishing.
Barcelona were missing Andreas Christensen, Eric García and Xavi Espart, and had not kept a clean sheet in 18 Champions League games. Despite this, the hosts created chances and were able to add a third goal through Raphinha.
Emery’s record at the Nou Camp now stands at 15 defeats in 16 games, with only three wins in 31 attempts against Barcelona. He added that the team must be ruthless in the attacking third and that the experience will be valuable for the future.
Villa’s captain John McGinn told TNT Sports that the club is competitive against top teams and that the loss will help them prepare for their next Champions League match against Manchester United on Sunday.
