Maxwell Announces Retirement from All International Formats

The 38‑year‑old Australian batter Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. After stepping away from One Day Internationals in June last year, Maxwell has now also ended his career in Twenty20 Internationals, List A and first‑class matches. He will remain in the domestic arena, playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League under contract through the end of the 2027‑28 season.
Maxwell finished his T20I career with 2,897 runs in 130 matches, the third‑highest total for Australia in the format, at a strike rate exceeding 154. He also scored five centuries, a record he shares with Rohit Sharma.
Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said the decision had been discussed for some time. "We probably had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup," he explained. "And it was pretty open‑ended. There wasn’t any pressure from Australia team management and we decided to sort of leave the door open. There was a couple of series that were coming up in which they were going to look to the future, and we saw that in Bangladesh with guys getting their opportunity and performing really well."
Maxwell noted that an England white‑ball tour, which includes a T20I in Melbourne, had sparked thoughts of a farewell match at his home ground. "There was a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send‑off game at the MCG," he said. "But I can completely understand the direction they're going with this squad. There's going to be a lot of change, I suppose, over the next 12 to 24 months with the Olympics coming up in 2028, and they've got to make sure that they get their eyeballs on a few young guys coming through and making sure that they're getting exposed to international pressure that you probably can’t always get from a BBL fixture."
Maxwell added that he had been preparing for the Big Bash League, undergoing knee injections and eight weeks of rehabilitation to stay ready for the domestic competition.
His final international appearance was against Oman in February, the last of Australia’s matches at a T20 World Cup where the team exited in the group stage.
