Santa Fe and Vasco da Gama Battle to Scoreless Draw in Sudamericana Quarter-Final Opener

Independiente Santa Fe and Vasco da Gama played to a 0-0 draw at El Campín in Bogotá in the first leg of their CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarter-final tie. Vasco goalkeeper Léo Jardim was a key figure in preserving the clean sheet for the Brazilian visitors. The return leg will take place next Tuesday at the Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro, with the winner advancing to face the victor of the tie between Boca Juniors and São Paulo. Both sides shared the ball and created chances throughout the first half. Vasco gradually took control as the half progressed, showing more attacking ambition, but Santa Fe goalkeeper Weimar Asprilla, who had also impressed in the previous round against River Plate, denied them a lead going into the break. In the eighth minute, Iván Scarpeta headed a cross from the right past Jardim, only for the goal to be disallowed for a tight offside call. Jardim himself then nearly gifted Santa Fe a goal, launching a clearance from his own box that almost looped into his own net, with Asprilla tipping it behind for a corner. From the resulting corner, Vasco threatened again as Argentine forward Claudio Spinelli won a header, but Asprilla made the save. Just before halftime, Santa Fe countered effectively: Uruguayan Franco Fagúndez set up Helibelton Palacios, who broke down the right flank but failed to convert his one-on-one chance against Jardim. The second half opened with more physical intensity and a tightly contested midfield battle. Spinelli had the first clear opportunity, going one-on-one with Asprilla, who produced a crucial save to keep the score level. Santa Fe responded with a dangerous move of their own, as Fagúndez dribbled past fellow Uruguayan Alan Saldivia and struck a left-footed shot that hit the crossbar. With the home crowd behind them, and manager Pablo Repetto making attacking substitutions, Santa Fe pressed forward. Ten minutes from time, Alexis Zapata tested Jardim from distance, but the goalkeeper made another key save. In the closing moments, Jardim produced a stunning double save, first denying a header from Fagúndez and then another headed effort from Rodallega. In the final play of the match, Vasco nearly snatched a late winner when Bruno Duarte's shot went just wide of Asprilla's post. The tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg in Rio de Janeiro. Match notes: Santa Fe have kept clean sheets in four of their five Sudamericana matches this season, giving them the best clean-sheet rate (80%) among teams with at least two matches played in the competition. Vasco da Gama remain unbeaten in five matches against Colombian opposition in CONMEBOL competitions (three wins, two draws), with their last defeat coming in 1996 against Santa Fe in the Copa CONMEBOL. Vasco's nine first-half shots marked their highest tally in the opening 45 minutes of an away match in CONMEBOL competitions since at least 2013, surpassing the seven attempts recorded against Independiente Medellín earlier this year. The Brazilian club has also completed 301 carries of over 10 metres toward the byline in this year's Sudamericana, the second-highest total behind Bragantino's 307. Additionally, no team has attempted more dribbles in the competition this season than Vasco (233), and their 71.4% dribble success rate (10 of 14) against Santa Fe was their best of the campaign. Midfielder Ramón Rique made eight ball recoveries in the match, his highest total in a single CONMEBOL fixture across eight appearances.
