California Woman Pleads Guilty to $18 Million Fraud, Spending Funds on Luxury Goods and Private Jets

A 47‑year‑old woman in California has pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges after stealing nearly $18 million (about ₹170 crore) from her employer over a ten‑year period. Lizbeth Sherman, of El Dorado Hills, admitted to diverting funds from her employer’s bank account, which she accessed as an executive assistant to a retired venture capitalist in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prosecutors say Sherman began misusing the account in 2015 and repeatedly transferred money to cover her personal credit‑card bills until May 2025.

The stolen money financed an extravagant lifestyle that included designer handbags from Louis Vuitton, Rolex watches, luxury holidays, private jet travel, vehicles and extensive renovations to her $2 million home. Sherman also sold many of the luxury items she purchased on online marketplaces, reportedly earning about $450,000 from one such sale last year.

In December 2025, law enforcement searched Sherman’s residence and recovered more than 1,500 luxury items, many in mint condition with original packaging and tags. The haul included Louis Vuitton handbags, exotic‑fur handbags, Christian Louboutin boots, Rolex watches and expensive wine bottles.

Sherman faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. She is scheduled for sentencing in March 2027.
