Muriqi’s Header Secures Fenerbahce Victory Over Liverpool
By Andy Hunter

Andoni Iraola arrived in Istanbul hoping to improve Liverpool’s attack, but left the match with new concerns about the team’s defense. Liverpool, who had previously maintained a perfect Champions League record, suffered a second consecutive defeat, this time to Fenerbahce. The visitors took an early lead twice, with Trey Nyoni scoring his first senior goal and substitute Alexander Isak adding a header. Fenerbahce responded quickly on both occasions and ultimately won when Vedat Muriqi, who replaced Romelu Lukaku in the second half, headed a long throw‑in into the bottom corner. Muriqi’s goal was the decisive third, giving Fenerbahce a 3‑2 victory.
Fenerbahce’s goals came from set pieces: a free‑kick, a corner and a long throw‑in. Liverpool’s manager, Iraola, described the goals as “cheap and messy” and said the team had been working on defending set pieces since pre‑season, but the effort was insufficient. He also noted that Ronald Araújo’s absence on the bench contributed to the defensive lapses.
Liverpool dominated possession for much of the game, but the ageing Fenerbahce side, featuring familiar Premier League names, managed to hold on. The Turkish crowd was loud, with constant whistling and a bouncing upper tier that tested the visitors’ concentration. Referee Clément Turpin was lenient, and the video assistant referee did not award a penalty for a potential foul by Mason Greenwood.
In the first half, Liverpool’s lead came from a combination of Ngumoha’s darting run and a shot that was deflected into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai. Nyoni finished with a low volley that beat goalkeeper Ederson. Fenerbahce almost equalised immediately after the restart, but a cross by Irfan Can Kahveci hit the crossbar. A free‑kick from Greenwood later, deflected by Jérémy Jacquet, slipped past Alisson.
The second half mirrored the first. Liverpool maintained control until Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak combined to restore the visitors’ advantage. Fenerbahce levelled again when Gakpo’s header was glancing off the line, allowing Brown to tap in. Muriqi’s header, however, proved decisive.
Iraola admitted communication was difficult in the stadium and that the team had to re‑evaluate how they conceded goals. The match ended with Fenerbahce holding a hard‑earned 3‑2 win over Liverpool.
