By Amit Bhelari

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) scheme, 43,14,959 poor families in Bihar have completed the construction of their pucca houses. The Rural Development Department reports that approvals for 49,09,740 beneficiaries have been granted against an overall target of 49,16,649 houses set from the financial year 2016‑17 onwards. The state government has spent ₹56,743.40 crore on the scheme to provide houses with basic amenities.
PMAY‑G, a flagship scheme of the Union Ministry of Rural Development, aims to provide a pucca house with basic amenities to all houseless households and those living in kutcha or dilapidated houses. The department has accelerated implementation by dividing it into two phases.
Phase 1 (FY 2016‑17 to 2021‑22) targeted 37,01,138 houses. Housing assistance was approved for 37,00,531 beneficiaries, and 36,63,701 houses have been completed. All three instalments of financial assistance were released on time.
Phase 2 (FY 2024‑25 and 2025‑26) targets 12,15,511 houses. Housing approvals have been granted to 12,09,209 beneficiaries. The first, second and third instalments have been paid to 11,70,945; 10,21,366; and 7,13,329 beneficiaries respectively. Consequently, 6,51,258 beneficiaries have completed their houses in this phase.
The total number of completed houses in both phases is 43,14,959, with 36,63,701 from Phase 1 and 6,51,258 from Phase 2. Each beneficiary receives ₹1.20 lakh in financial assistance.
"The government is fully committed to ensuring that the benefits of development reach the most disadvantaged sections of society in rural areas. Poor and vulnerable families are not only receiving shelter but also an opportunity to live with dignity through the PMAY‑Gramin," said Rural Development Department and Information & Public Relations Department Minister Shravan Kumar. He added that the department is ensuring construction of approved houses with complete transparency and efficiency, and that instalment payments are transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts on time to avoid obstacles in the construction process. He also noted that houses currently in progress will be expedited to achieve the overall target.
