Assam Police Constable Booked After Alleged Assault on Woman and Family

An Assam police constable, identified as Anil Tai and posted in the traffic branch of Mariani police station, was booked for allegedly barging into a rented house and assaulting a woman and her family members, including children, with a stick over a dispute. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday when Tai entered the rented room of Husnara Khatun in the Gandhi Nagar area and attacked her family. Husnara said the constable shouted at them, slapped and beat them with a stick, and that women in the family were physically assaulted. A video of the alleged incident later surfaced on social media. On Tuesday evening, Jorhat police shared screenshots of a social media post on X and announced that an FIR had been registered following the social media report and a complaint from the aggrieved party. The constable was closed to office and suspended pending a fair investigation. Police said the house is owned by Imtiaz Hussain and is occupied by two tenant families, one of which included the constable’s daughter. An argument reportedly broke out between the families over a water pump switch. Jorhat senior superintendent of police Subhrajyoti Bora said the act was not done under the power of being police. A counter‑FIR has also been registered at Mariani police station against Husnara after a complaint was lodged by the constable’s daughter, who accused the woman of torturing her. No arrests have been made in either case so far, and the police are continuing the investigation.
