CPI(M) leader and lawmaker M.Y. Tarigami said on Monday that, despite court rulings, many people in Kashmir still struggle to obtain Criminal Investigation Department (CID) clearance. He cited High Court decisions that a person cannot be denied security clearance solely because relatives are alleged to have been involved in militancy. However, he noted that the clearance process continues to be impeded by allegations of involvement of even distant relatives. Tarigami pointed out that in some cases the accused relatives died years ago, yet their past still affects their families, denying younger generations opportunities through no fault of their own. He called for a review of the verification process so that individuals are assessed on their own conduct rather than the alleged actions of relatives. While acknowledging security concerns, he stressed that they should not come at the cost of the rights and future of innocent people.
