James Gunn Explains Batman and Joker’s Status in DCU, Fans Await Batman’s Debut
James Gunn recently hosted a podcast in which he clarified what is and isn’t canon in the DC Universe (DCU). During the episode, he addressed fan questions about the existence of Batman and the Joker in the shared universe. Gunn noted that Batman appears briefly in the animated series Creature Commandos, which streams on HBO Max, confirming that the character exists in the DCU. He added that the Joker has not yet been confirmed in the universe.
The DCU’s first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters. Fans are curious about which upcoming films will feature Batman. Gunn mentioned that the film The Brave and The Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti, was intended to star a new Bruce Wayne and his son Damian. However, development on the movie has been slow, and Gunn expressed uncertainty about whether the film will still include Robin.
Gunn’s comments come as the DCU continues to build its roster of films. Clayface is currently in theaters as part of the 2026 release list, and the next DCU film, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Fans hope for an update on The Brave and The Bold and for a definitive introduction of Batman in the DCU soon.
