Carrick says speculation over his future will not affect United’s Champions League match

By Alexander Hoad

Michael Carrick said that speculation about his future will not influence Manchester United’s preparation or performance in their upcoming Champions League game against Roma. United are currently winless in nine matches, their worst run in 38 years, and sit outside the relegation zone on goal difference with one win and seven points. A 2‑0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday has intensified speculation that the Roma match on Tuesday night could be Carrick’s last. Roma have been unbeaten in Serie A and have scored 16 goals in their last four matches, with their only defeat coming in a 4‑3 loss to Real Madrid on 14 October. Carrick told reporters at his pre‑match media conference that he is focused on the game and that any future developments are irrelevant to the team’s preparation. He added that the players remain committed to the club and to each other, and that the dressing room is in a good place. Carrick also noted that United’s only win since August was a 4‑0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford on 10 September, and that a win against Roma would keep United’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. He said the team must play better, make better decisions, and stay focused on progressing to the later stages. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo supported Carrick, saying that the club has always experienced ups and downs and that the team must fight together to overcome the current difficulties. He expressed gratitude for the trust and advice he has received from Carrick since he joined the club.
