Thieves Steal Four Renoir Museum Paintings Worth €9 Million in Southern France, One Dropped During Escape

Two thieves broke into the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, southern France, early Tuesday, making off with four artworks valued at approximately €9 million (around Rs 98 crore), local mayor Bryan Masson confirmed. The suspects were captured on the town's surveillance cameras fleeing the scene, and one of the stolen paintings was dropped during their getaway and later recovered, according to Masson. The museum's alarm system was triggered at 5:48 am, with municipal police arriving on site just five minutes later. The Renoir Museum, established in 1960 at the final residence of French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir before his death in 1919, displays his artwork alongside personal items such as his easel and wheelchair. This incident follows a similar high-profile theft less than a year ago at the Louvre in Paris, where eight items collectively worth roughly $100 million were stolen in a brazen daytime heist.
