Kyiv Attacked by Russian Drones and Missiles, Killing 2 as U.S.-Backed Peace Efforts Continue
By AP

Russian forces launched a wave of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv overnight into Tuesday, September 8, 2026, killing two people and injuring at least 10 others, according to local authorities. The assault followed a brief lull in attacks over the weekend, during which U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff had arrived in the Ukrainian capital for their first official visit as part of renewed efforts to broker an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported damage and fires in at least five districts of Kyiv. The Kyiv City Military Administration said in a Telegram statement that civilian infrastructure was damaged in at least 16 locations across the city.
Among the sites hit was a 26-story non-residential building in the Holosiivskyi district. A separate fire broke out in the same district and spread to a nearby non-residential structure. Rescue teams saved one person during search operations there and evacuated two others from an apartment in a 16-story residential building.
In the Solomianskyi district, people were reported trapped inside a five-story residential building. The State Emergency Service said at least 10 people were rescued overall, with additional fires recorded in the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts.
