Central and state‑level trade union leaders staged a satyagraha outside the headquarters of the Madhyamam daily in Kozhikode on Saturday, October 31. The protest, organized by the Joint Trade Union Committee, was a response to the management’s failure to resolve an indefinite strike that has been ongoing for two months. The strike began on September 3 under the Kerala Union of Working Journalists and the Kerala Newspaper Employees’ Federation, with support from the Joint Trade Union Coordination Committee. Union leaders allege that the management and the government have ignored the agitation. They claim that contractual employees are paid regularly while permanent employees’ dues are withheld to force them into contractual work or resignation. Even by the end of October, permanent staff had received only a nominal portion of their February salary. The satyagraha was opened by CITU general secretary Elamaram Kareem.
