Ocean Dream Blue‑Green Diamond Doubles in Value Over 12 Years

The 5.50‑carat Ocean Dream, a natural blue‑green diamond, sold for $17.3 million at Christie’s Geneva auction in May 2026, nearly doubling the price it fetched 12 years earlier. In May 2014 the same stone was auctioned at Christie’s Geneva for CHF 7.7 million, about $8.5 million at the time. The diamond is classified as a Fancy Vivid Blue‑Green stone and is the largest known diamond in that colour category. It weighs 5.50 carats, has a triangular cut and an SI1 clarity grade. The finished stone is less than half the weight of its original rough, which weighed 11.70 carats and was discovered in Central Africa in the 1990s. The blue‑green colour results from natural radiation creating colour centres in the crystal structure. The Ocean Dream has been displayed publicly, including at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., in 2003 as part of the exhibition “The Splendour of Diamonds.” The 2026 auction price exceeded the presale estimate of CHF 7 million to CHF 10 million. The sale highlights that, for fancy coloured diamonds, colour, cut, origin and documented history are as important as carat weight in determining value.
