Kerala Police Introduce Citizen Help Desks to Replace PRO System
By PTI

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Police have replaced the existing Public Relations Officer (PRO) system with integrated Citizen Help Desks at all police stations. The new desks will serve as a single point of contact for visitors to lodge complaints, access digital services, or seek information. They will handle complaint submissions and issue acknowledgements, provide dedicated assistance to women, create a safe environment for children and parents, give priority to senior citizens, and offer appropriate support to transgender persons. Services will also be accessible to people with disabilities. The desks will address complaints related to online fraud, cybercrime, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the 1930 toll‑free helpline, and offences committed through social media. They will offer basic legal guidance and direct visitors to legal aid centres when needed. Additionally, the desks will help submit applications for services such as Accident General Diary entries and No Objection Certificates, and provide information on various digital and online services offered by Kerala Police. Applications under the Right to Information Act and requests for copies of First Information Reports can also be submitted through the desks. Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the decision on Friday, arguing that replacing the PRO system would make it harder for ordinary people to approach the police and could reduce the human interaction needed for complaints and grievances. He warned that the help desks might become mere counters for processing requests rather than offering the personal interaction and reassurance citizens need when seeking assistance from the police.
