Namibia Clinch 2-1 Series Lead Over Ireland with Second Consecutive Win
By Helge Schutz

The FNB Namibian Eagles secured a second straight victory against Ireland on Tuesday, taking a 2-1 lead in their five‑match series. Ireland had won the opening match on 22 October by 55 runs, but Namibia responded with two emphatic wins. On 24 October, Namibia defeated Ireland by 31 runs, marking their first win against a test‑playing nation. Namibia posted 321 for six wickets in 50 overs before dismissing Ireland for 290 all out. Captain Gerhard Erasmus scored 156 not out off 125 balls (14 fours, 4 sixes), while Jan Frylinck added 76. Erasmus’ innings was the joint second‑highest by an associate‑nation batter, behind Scotland’s Callum McLeod (157 vs Afghanistan) and alongside Scotland’s Kyle Coetzer (156 vs Bangladesh). Ireland’s Jack Brassell took 4 for 52, and Erasmus took 2 for 13 to earn man of the match.
In the Tuesday match, Frylinck led Namibia’s batting with a century, scoring 126 off 122 balls (9 fours, 4 sixes), his third ODI century and his 1,500th ODI run. Namibia won the toss and elected to bat. After losing Louren Steenkamp for 13, Frylinck and Malan Kruger added a 48‑run partnership before Kruger was caught and bowled by Andy McBrine for 42 off 46 balls. Erasmus joined Frylinck for a 102‑run partnership off 79 balls. Erasmus was out for 54 off 51 balls, while Alex Volschenk added 36 off 26 balls. Namibia finished with 316 for seven.
Ireland’s chase faltered early when captain Paul Stirling retired hurt. Bernard Scholtz dismissed Cade Carmichael lbw for a duck in the first over. Ruben Trumpelmann took Andrew Balbirnie for 20, Brassell took Lorcan Tucker for 26, and Trumpelmann dismissed Harry Tector for six, leaving Ireland 56 for 4. Curtis Campher and Andy McBrine added a 61‑run partnership, but Scholtz removed McBrine for 30. Campher reached a century off 82 balls, but was run out by Kruger for 106 off 86 balls, ending Ireland’s hopes. George Dockrell and Gavin Hoey added 25 and 21 respectively before Ireland were all out for 253, 63 runs short of the target.
Namibia’s bowlers were Scholtz (2 for 31), Trumpelmann (2 for 37) and Brassell (2 for 72). The win puts Namibia in the driving seat to complete a first‑ever series victory against a test‑playing nation.
Coach Craig Williams said he was pleased with the win but noted work remained. "We played really well in certain areas and the fact that another batter in our top four got a century allowed us to set up a good score, so we are happy with the win," he said. "To go 2-1 up in the series puts us in a good position, so with two games left we need to reset quickly. We’ve played good cricket over the last couple of months, put in a lot of work, and we’d love to get a series win. We’ll enjoy tonight but tomorrow morning we must reset and look at what we can do better," he added. He added that after the historic win on 24 October, the team did not celebrate much because they felt the game was not played well enough. "We didn’t celebrate that much because we didn’t play a good game. But getting that first win against a test nation shows what we are capable of," he said. "Ireland are an extremely good team. You can’t take anything for granted against them and they’ll do their homework, so we’ve just got to get better. If we can play our best in all three departments, we stand a good chance of taking a series win."
