Delhi Airport T3 to Receive 40,000‑Sq‑Metre Carpet Refurbishment Inspired by Indian Heritage

The departure area of Delhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 will undergo a refurbishment that will replace about 40,000 square metres of carpet. The new carpet, described as ‘Flow of Indian Heritage – A Journey in Colour’, will feature dense, colourful patterns in the queuing zones and evolving motifs along the boarding‑gate stretch, with concentrated colours near the end walls to create visual focal points. The palette of terracotta, rust, ochre and orange will be balanced by a neutral grey base to reduce the visibility of dust and minor soiling in the high‑footfall environment. Officials said the design aims to bring colour, rhythm and playfulness to the extended passenger waiting area while meeting functional demands. The project began in June and is being carried out in stages to minimise disruption. A Delhi International Airport Ltd spokesperson said the replacement is part of routine maintenance to address normal wear and tear and to refresh the terminal’s appearance. The new carpeting will retain the same material, durability and maintenance requirements as the existing one, and the phased execution will keep passenger movement and terminal operations uninterrupted. The terminal, opened in 2010, had previously removed carpet from some areas in 2018 in favour of hard flooring, sparking a social media debate about carpet design.
