Microsoft Director Explores Construction, Plumbing and Outdoor Work After 26-Year Career

After nearly 26 years at Microsoft, Shawn Mrzena retired from his role as a corporate director in Redmond, Washington, on July 2, 2026, following a voluntary retirement offer. In a LinkedIn post celebrating 90 days outside the corporate world, Mrzena shared photos of his new activities, which include raising beams on construction sites, designing and fabricating outdoor gear, working as a plumbing technician fixing fittings under a trailer, and guiding fly‑fishing trips in mountain waters. He described the past three months as a chance to reconnect with hands‑on work and to learn new skills. Mrzena has not committed to any of these activities as a permanent career; he plans to decide his next move in 2027, leaving open the possibility of part‑time work, learning a new trade, pursuing a different career or starting his own business. During his tenure at Microsoft, Mrzena held positions in sales, cloud solutions, security, compliance and artificial intelligence business strategy, including Global Sales Leader and Director of Global Security and Compliance Sales Programs. He thanked customers and colleagues for their support in a farewell message that highlighted the joy of learning, building and solving problems together. Mrzena’s departure follows Microsoft’s earlier voluntary retirement programme, which offered eligible employees retirement‑related support. The company later announced a new Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, 2026, aimed at employees at level 70 and below in participating teams in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The offer provides financial support and career planning resources for employees considering opportunities outside the company. The broader changes in the technology sector have brought renewed attention to how experienced employees approach retirement and career transitions. Mrzena’s immediate priority is spending time with his family, engaging in building projects, enjoying time on rivers and oceans, and taking naps with his two French bulldogs. He will decide his next steps when 2027 arrives.
