IPL 2027 Auction Set for Goa on 16 December, Retention Deadline 15 November

The player auction for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will take place in Goa on 16 December. All ten franchises must announce by 15 November which of their current players they wish to retain. The auction will be a mini‑auction, allowing teams to keep most of their existing players and buy new ones to fill vacancies.

The 2027 auction follows three years of overseas auctions: 2024 in Dubai, 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and 2026 in Abu Dhabi. Holding the auction in India reduces the logistical costs and complexity of arranging travel, accommodation and transport for the large number of owners, officials, coaching staff and recruitment representatives.

After the 15 November retention deadline, the BCCI will send each franchise a list of players available for auction. Teams will then select the players they wish to bid for, and a final list with the order of appearance in different sets will be prepared. This process allows teams to assess their needs—such as a fast bowler, a middle‑over spinner or a quick‑scoring batter—before the auction.

On the same day as the auction, 16 December, India will play Sri Lanka in an ODI in Bengaluru. The match is scheduled for that day, although it is unclear whether the venue or date will change. The first ODI of the series is set for 13 December in New Delhi, and the BCCI has denied plans to move it.

The IPL trade window, which opens one month after the end of a season and closes one week before the auction, remains open until one month before the start of the next season. Since the end of the 2026 season, two trades have been reported: Lucknow Super Giants traded captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals for spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and Delhi Capitals traded fast bowler T. Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for leg‑spinner Zeeshan Ansari.

The BCCI has not yet finalized the dates for the 2027 season. In 2024, the board identified a tentative window of 14 March to 30 May for the next three seasons, but a September 2026 statement by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia suggested the season could begin in the latter half of March.

Potential high‑bid players in the mini‑auction include Australian all‑rounder Cameron Green, who KKR bought for ₹25.20 crore in 2026 and scored 322 runs and took seven wickets in 14 matches; Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, bought by KKR for ₹18 crore but limited by injury; and uncapped all‑rounder Prashant Veer, bought by CSK for ₹14.20 crore and scored 90 runs in six matches.

The future of the Impact Player rule remains undecided. The Governing Council has not yet made a final decision, and another meeting is expected in a month. Most franchises are opposed to the rule but may allow it to continue for at least another year, as some have built squads with the rule in mind.
