Hyderabad Wheat Prices Surge to Record Rs13,100 per 100kg

The price of a 100‑kilogram bag of wheat in Hyderabad’s open market has risen to a record Rs13,100, up Rs600 in just two days. Traders say the sharp increase is linked to the delay in releasing the government wheat quota, raising concerns that flour prices could climb to Rs160–170 per kilogram.
Market reports show the price was Rs12,500 on Saturday, rose to Rs12,800 on Sunday, and reached Rs13,100 on Monday, the highest level ever recorded in the open market. Flour mills and chakki owners are buying wheat from the market because they have not received wheat under the government quota.
The higher wheat cost has already impacted flour prices. Chakki owners sell flour at about Rs155 per kilogram wholesale, while retailers and general stores charge roughly Rs160 per kilogram. If wheat prices remain high, owners warn that flour could reach Rs170 per kilogram.
The Sindh government has announced a policy to release wheat stocks from government warehouses, but the official price has not yet been set. The provincial cabinet originally scheduled the release of the government wheat quota for October 1, but later moved the date to October 20. Owners say the delay has allowed traders and hoarders to raise prices in the open market.
Haji Muhammad Memon, president of the Flour Chakki Owners Social Welfare Association, told the Express that an artificial shortage of wheat has been created in Hyderabad’s open market. He said that even at Rs13,100 wheat is difficult to obtain and warned that hoarders could push prices higher in the coming days. Memon urged the Sindh Chief Minister to ensure the immediate release of the government wheat quota, warning that continued shortages could further raise flour prices across Hyderabad and other parts of interior Sindh.
