Two Anups Take Helm of India’s Major Private Banks

On October 1, the Reserve Bank of India approved the appointments of Anup Bagchi as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Bank and Anup Saha as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kotak Mahindra Bank. The moves remove succession uncertainty for both lenders, allowing investors to focus on growth, profitability and execution.

Bagchi will assume office on October 27, succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan. He has more than 30 years of experience in banking, capital markets, wealth management and insurance, having worked for the ICICI Group since 1992 in roles at ICICI Bank, ICICI Prudential Life and ICICI Securities. Bagchi is the first outsider to lead HDFC Bank, breaking the lender’s tradition of home‑grown leaders.

Saha will take charge on January 1, succeeding Ashok Vaswani. He has 32 years of professional experience, including 25 years in financial services across banking and non‑banking financial companies. Prior to joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, he held senior roles at Bajaj Finance and spent 14 years at ICICI Bank leading retail secured assets, business intelligence, retail and rural collections, credit cards and retail structured finance.

Both leaders have been granted full three‑year terms. Analysts note that the clarity on leadership should help lift the stocks of the two heavyweights and could trigger a broader re‑rating of the sector.

HDFC Bank has faced a series of governance and operational challenges in recent months, including the mis‑selling of AT1 bonds, a rapid turnover of top executives, and a decline in share price of 25 % over the past year. The bank’s current chief financial officer, Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, is set to retire on November 30, and two long‑standing directors will reach term limits in January 2027.

Kotak Mahindra Bank’s focus under Saha is expected to strengthen retail banking, leveraging his experience in consumer finance, digital platforms and analytics.

Both banks are now tasked with translating their new leadership into tangible growth and profitability, with analysts monitoring deposit mobilisation, loan growth, margin recovery and return ratios as key performance indicators.
