Senior Insurance Officer Arrested in Guwahati Woman’s Suicide Case

A senior officer of a private insurance company has been arrested on charges of abetment of suicide after a 29‑year‑old employee was found dead in her rented apartment in Guwahati’s Hengrabari area. The woman, from Sualkuchi, worked for the same insurance company. Police received a call from the apartment owner on Tuesday that the woman was unresponsive and a foul smell was emanating from inside. When officers arrived, they discovered the body hanging from a ceiling fan. An alleged suicide note accused the officer, Biswanath Das, of subjecting her to mental and physical torture. Das, who is the state head of the company, was detained on Tuesday and formally arrested on Wednesday after questioning. The case of abetment of suicide has been lodged against him, who resides in Purulia, West Bengal. The body has been sent for post‑mortem, and the report is pending. A female relative of the deceased, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the woman was not a person who would take her own life and that foul play was suspected. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the death.
