Former Bangladesh Air Force Chief Sheikh Abdul Hannan Arrested in Qatar on Corruption Charges

Bangladesh’s former Chief of Air Staff, Sheikh Abdul Hannan, was detained by Qatari authorities on October 15, according to the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC said it was notified of the arrest through Interpol. Hannan, who led the Bangladesh Air Force from June 2021 to June 2024, is accused of accumulating assets exceeding his known sources of income and of conducting suspicious financial transactions through multiple bank accounts. The ACC has not yet established these allegations as proven offences. The commission stated that Interpol formally notified it of Hannan’s detention via email, confirming the Qatari law enforcement agency’s action. The ACC has approved filing charges against him under the Anti‑Corruption Commission Act, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Investigators claim Hannan accumulated assets worth more than Tk 3.28 crore beyond his declared income, and identified suspicious transactions amounting to Tk 27.63 crore through six personal bank accounts. The ACC also alleges that Hannan left Bangladesh despite an active travel ban and multiple corruption cases. Earlier legal measures in Bangladesh included a court order to attach two apartments belonging to Hannan and to freeze his bank accounts. The ACC’s investigation has named Hannan’s wife as an accused; she is alleged to have accumulated assets worth more than Tk 1.91 crore beyond her known sources of income, with assistance from her husband, and to have engaged in suspicious transactions amounting to Tk 1.18 crore through 32 bank accounts in her name. The commission has traced Hannan’s alleged offshore wealth to Canada and Dubai and identified assets registered in the names of his children in three countries. Sheikh Abdul Hannan, a retired four‑star air officer, was commissioned into the Bangladesh Air Force on July 14, 1984, and served in various operational, training and leadership roles. He holds a Category ‘A’ pilot rating, is a qualified flying instructor, and has specialist qualifications related to the MI‑17/171 helicopter fleet. His professional education includes training at the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur, Bangladesh, and the Pakistan Air Force Air War College, where he graduated in 1999, as well as a master’s degree in national security and war studies from Pakistan’s National Defence University in Islamabad. Hannan also served in United Nations peacekeeping missions, including the United Nations Protection Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 and the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2006–07. He was appointed Chief of Air Staff by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in June 2021, formally assuming command on June 12, 2021, succeeding Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat. Hannan served a three‑year term and retired on June 11, 2024, before the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office.
