By PTI

Three people, including two women, died when a speeding car struck the two‑wheeler they were riding in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The collision occurred close to Nedumbassery airport around 2 a.m. The riders had been returning home after tea at a nearby shop. A police officer told reporters that the victims were Gopika from Palakkad, Devika from Wayanad and Ijaz, a native of Karnataka. All three died after being rushed to the hospital, and the car was badly damaged. The driver, Suhail, was taken into police custody after a medical examination. He has been booked for attempted culpable homicide. The officer added that there is a possibility the driver was under the influence of intoxicating substances, and blood and other samples have been collected. Ernakulam Rural SP K S Sudarsan said forensic examination of the car is underway to determine if intoxicants were present. Preliminary investigation suggests the driver may have been drunk, but this must be confirmed by blood test reports, which are pending. Police will strengthen patrolling and other measures near the airport to prevent similar overspeeding accidents. Television footage showed the car approaching at very high speed and colliding with the two‑wheeler on the extreme left side of the wide road, which was destroyed with pieces scattered around the site.
