Supreme Court to Hear Delhi Detention Cases as 7,000 Arrests Prompt City‑wide Clampdown
By HT News Desk

On Saturday, Delhi was surrounded by 41,000 security personnel who prevented a planned protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The operation resulted in the detention of almost 7,000 people, including four former chief ministers and leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Police arrested protesters at railway stations, the airport, hotels, homes and on the streets, and used police stations, stadiums and community centres as temporary detention centres. Despite the crackdown, sporadic protests continued in various parts of the city. The Supreme Court will hold a special sitting today to consider pleas against the Delhi detentions and transport curbs. In unrelated news, actor Naseeruddin Shah is set to portray Salman Rushdie in a stage production based on the author’s memoir "Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder."
