Patriots Make Christian Gonzalez NFL's Highest-Paid Cornerback in $135 Million Extension

The New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed late Monday night on a four-year contract extension worth $135 million, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The deal makes the 24-year-old both the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history and the highest-paid player in franchise history.

Gonzalez surpasses defensive lineman Milton Williams, who previously held the Patriots' record with a four-year, $104 million contract that included $63 million guaranteed, signed during free agency in March 2025. With this new deal, Gonzalez becomes one of only two cornerbacks in league history to sign a contract exceeding $130 million, joining Seattle Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon, who signed a four-year, $132 million extension last month that had briefly made him the position's top earner.

The Patriots appeared to confirm the agreement through a social media post Monday night.

Gonzalez, selected by New England in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and was named to the Pro Bowl last season. His rookie campaign was cut short after just four games due to a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder. He bounced back in 2024, playing in 16 games and recording 50 solo tackles along with two interceptions.

Last season, a hamstring injury sustained during the preseason kept him out until Week 4. He went on to play in 14 regular-season games, posting career highs of 69 total tackles and 10 pass deflections. During the Patriots' postseason run to Super Bowl LX, Gonzalez delivered a pivotal interception against Denver Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham late in the fourth quarter of the AFC championship game, sealing the win.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft had signaled the team's intentions on the opening day of training camp, revealing that an extension offer was already on the table. "We love Christian Gonzalez," Kraft said at the time. "We love him as a player, as a person. That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it's the highest contract in the Patriots' franchise history. So we're glad we drafted him and we developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time."

Entering his fourth NFL season, Gonzalez was eligible for a rookie contract extension. New England had already exercised his fifth-year option earlier in the offseason. The Oregon product reported to training camp while negotiations were still underway, and the two sides finalized the agreement just before the Patriots' season opener Wednesday night against the Seahawks in Seattle.
