Minutes before a life‑sentence was handed down on Monday, Caleb Flynn sobbed as relatives read letters from his two daughters, Ava, 10, and Alyssa, 12. The girls asked painful questions about their mother’s death, with Ava writing, “Mommy was the perfect person…What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?” and Alyssa asking, “Did you really even think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?” The letters were read by family members in court as the family urged an Ohio judge to impose the maximum penalty. Flynn, 40, was convicted in February of the fatal shooting of his wife, Ashley, in their Tipp City home. Prosecutors said he killed her in part because of an affair with a fellow worship leader and staged the scene to make it look like an intruder. Flynn maintained his innocence, tearfully telling the court he loved Ashley, describing her as “beautiful and amazing in countless ways,” while acknowledging his infidelity. Ashley’s relatives highlighted her as a beloved teacher, devoted Christian, and devoted mother. The girls’ uncle, who is now raising the children with his wife, Ashley’s sister, said the statements were “straight from the heart” and “totally unedited.” Flynn appeared in court wearing an orange prison jumpsuit with his wrists shackled and was sentenced to life without parole. He also received nine years for tampering with evidence and seven years for firearm enhancements, all to be served consecutively. The girls urged Flynn to confess and repent, with Ava writing, “Please tell Jesus that you’re sorry. It’s not going to change your punishment, but it will determine your eternal reward someday.” Alyssa added, “The least you could do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome.” Ashley’s sister Kayla Keyt and brother‑in‑law Matthew Keyt described helping the girls cope, noting that the family has “never been stronger.” Flynn apologized to the family for breaking their wedding vows and for his “hateful” comments about Ashley, but maintained he did not kill her. Judge Jeannine Pratt admonished Flynn for the selfish actions that shattered his daughters’ lives, stating, “You took from them something they can never get back – their mother.” She emphasized that no sentence can bring Ashley back, but accountability and justice are required. The report was contributed by CNN’s Lauren del Valle, Eric Levenson and Elise Hammond.
