A growing number of young Australian footballers are choosing the A-League as a launching pad for their careers, following a pathway blazed by players such as Paul Okon-Engstler and Lucas Herrington. The latest to follow suit is James Overy, an 18-year-old Manchester United fullback who has signed with Sydney FC.

Before joining Sydney FC last season, Okon-Engstler had only played for Benfica's youth and reserve sides, appearing in competitions such as Liga Portugal 2, Liga Next Gen and the Revelacao Under-23s. After a single season with Sydney FC, including a mid-season coaching change ahead of the finals, he earned a Socceroos call-up and has since moved to the Bundesliga.

Herrington, who turned 19 last weekend, had made just 17 senior appearances for Brisbane Roar in the A-League by the time he turned 18.

Data from Twenty First Group shows that under-23 players accounted for 31% of all minutes played in the A-League last season. Separately, CIES Football Observatory figures for 2025 found that the A-League led global rankings for the percentage of minutes played by players eligible for their national team's under-21 side, at 17.7%.

This trend has coincided with a notably young Socceroos squad featuring prominently in North America this year.

Overy's move to Sydney FC follows the examples of Okon-Engstler and Herrington. Despite reported interest from Rangers, Overy opted for the A-League, prioritising regular senior football over a move to a bigger European league. He had trained with Manchester United's first team under Michael Carrick and was called up by Socceroos coach Tony Popovic despite not having played a senior match.

Manchester United have included clauses in Overy's contract that keep them informed of his progress, meaning Sydney FC could earn a further transfer fee if he succeeds, similar to the arrangement involving Okon-Engstler.

At Sydney FC, Overy will play under coach Patrick Kisnorbo in a squad that combines experienced professionals with emerging talent. Senior players include fullbacks Rhyan Grant, 35, and Ben Garuccio, along with Harrison Devenish-Meares, Socceroos contender Al Hassan Toure and former Urawa Red Diamonds player Takahiro Sekine. Younger squad members include Akol Akon, Mathias Macallister, Joe Lacey and Tiago Quintal.

Overy's arrival raises questions about squad dynamics, including whether it could affect Grant's long-standing position at right-back, or whether it might allow Kisnorbo greater tactical flexibility, such as deploying Grant at centre-back or shifting Overy into a midfield or wingback role.

The pathway forged by Okon-Engstler and Herrington, and now being followed by Overy, is seen as an example of the A-League successfully bridging young talent with pathways to the Socceroos, offering fans the chance to follow players from domestic football through to the international stage.
