The move has added a fresh political twist to the constituency just as counting is underway and attention is fixed on the outcome of the closely watched contest.

The suspension was announced by Harish Choudhary, Congress general secretary in charge of Madhya Pradesh, with the approval of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. According to the report, the order was issued late on Sunday night and sent to key party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal and Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari. The party did not publicly spell out the detailed reasons in the order, but the action came after allegations of anti-party activity.

Bharti, who previously represented the Datia Assembly seat, had already been disqualified from the legislature earlier this year after a court sentenced him to three years in prison in a cheating case. That disqualification led to the bypoll in Datia. His political standing had therefore already changed significantly before the latest Congress action.

The timing of the suspension is noteworthy because it came just before the vote count, when parties typically try to present a united front. In Datia, however, the campaign had already been marked by internal friction. Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh had reportedly accused Bharti of damaging the party’s campaign and helping the BJP, which created a stir within the state unit. The suspension appears to be the party’s response to those claims.

The development also adds to the political significance of the Datia bypoll, where the Congress and BJP have been locked in a competitive contest. Even though the seat had become vacant after Bharti’s disqualification, his presence in local politics continued to influence the campaign narrative. By acting against him before the result, Congress has signaled that it is unwilling to tolerate public dissent or alleged sabotage.

For Bharti, the action may have limited immediate electoral impact since he is no longer in the legislature, but it carries symbolic weight. It reflects the Congress leadership’s attempt to enforce discipline at a sensitive moment and avoid any message of disunity ahead of a high-stakes result.

As the Datia count continues, the suspension is likely to remain part of the post-result political conversation. Whether the party’s move helps contain internal dissent or instead deepens the controversy will become clearer in the days ahead.

A day before the result of the Datia bypoll, the Congress took disciplinary action against former MLA Rajendra Bharti, suspending him from the party’s primary membership.
