The Directorate also asked District Education Officers to issue the necessary guidelines to schools in their respective districts and ensure that all government schools remain open on Independence Day.

Schools have also been directed to participate in official Independence Day functions organised at the tehsil, sub-division and district headquarters. The order mandates strict compliance with these instructions at all levels, with the Directorate emphasising that the celebrations should reflect the patriotic spirit of the occasion.

The decision to keep schools open on August 15 comes as part of the state government’s broader initiative to instil a deeper sense of patriotism and national pride among students. By involving students in official Independence Day functions at various administrative levels, the government aims to create a more immersive and meaningful celebration experience.

The Directorate has asked district education authorities and school heads to issue necessary instructions to all institutions under their jurisdiction and ensure that the celebrations are conducted in accordance with the government’s directives. Additionally, the education directorate has ordered these instructions to be uploaded on the departmental website so that all concerned officials and schools can complete necessary preparations in time.

This is not the first time Himachal Pradesh has taken such a step. In 2017, marking the 70th anniversary of Independence, the state government had similarly directed all government schools to remain open on August 15 and organise patriotic programmes. At that time, the government had warned that action would be taken against principals and headmasters who kept schools closed or failed to organise programmes on the day.

The 2017 order had mandated that schools organise essay writing, quiz competitions, debates, slogan writing competitions, and other activities related to freedom fighters and scientists. Schools were also asked to screen periodic films based on the progress from the time of Independence to the present. Principals were required to submit illustrated reports to the Directorate by August 16.

The current 2026 directive follows a similar pattern, with schools expected to organise a range of patriotic activities beyond just the flag-hoisting ceremony. The emphasis on cultural programmes and participation in official functions at tehsil, sub-division, and district levels suggests a more comprehensive approach to celebrating the national day.

While August 15 is traditionally a gazetted holiday across India, several states have occasionally taken steps to keep educational institutions open on Independence Day to ensure meaningful participation in national celebrations. The move has generally been viewed as a way to strengthen the connection between younger generations and the values associated with India’s freedom struggle.

The Himachal Pradesh government’s decision aligns with broader efforts across the country to revitalise patriotic education and ensure that national days are not merely treated as holidays but as opportunities for reflection and celebration of the nation’s achievements.

Education officials in the state have been tasked with ensuring that all schools receive the necessary guidelines well in advance of August 15, allowing adequate time for preparation of cultural programmes, decoration of school premises, and coordination with local administration for participation in official functions.

The order has been issued at a time when schools across the state are in the middle of their academic session, with the monsoon holidays typically concluding in late July or early August. The directive ensures that the Independence Day celebrations will be integrated into the regular academic calendar rather than being treated as an isolated event.

All government schools in Himachal Pradesh will remain open on August 15 as the state government has directed educational institutions to celebrate Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and patriotic events, marking a departure from the usual holiday observed on the national occasion.
