Tokyo Disneyland will raise its one-day adult passport price to as much as 12,400 yen (about ₹7,400) for certain dates starting in October, while Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka has joined the trend by introducing a new variable pricing system.

According to Japanese local media including NHK, Oriental Land, which operates Tokyo Disneyland, will adjust ticket prices beginning in October. One-day passes for adults (18 and older) will rise to as much as 12,400 yen depending on the visit date and crowd levels. This represents an increase of about 1,000 to 1,500 yen from the previous top price, marking the first time ticket prices have exceeded 12,000 yen.

The most expensive days are during the October holidays and weekends, including the 11th, 17th, and 24th. Passes for middle and high school students will be adjusted to a maximum of 12,000 yen, and children’s tickets (ages 4 through elementary school) to 5,900 yen. This is Disneyland’s first fee increase in about three years since 2023.

The operator cited rising labor costs due to wage increases and higher facility maintenance and management expenses as the reasons behind the price hike. Considering that a family of four’s admission ticket cost 14,200 yen when the park opened in 1983, the daily admission fee paid by a single adult now approaches the price of a family ticket at that time.

The ticket increases are not limited to Disneyland. Universal Studios Japan in Osaka will introduce a new sales method starting in September, adding pricing that varies by booking time on top of its existing per-visit-date variable pricing system. Even tickets for the same date may vary in price depending on demand and sales conditions, and the maximum price will not be disclosed.

Sanrio Puroland will also adjust its top admission fee to 6,900 yen from next month, an increase of 1,000 yen from the previous price. The trend of passing cost burdens onto visitors is spreading, centered on popular facilities.

According to Japanese research firm Teikoku Databank, 50 facilities, or about 26% of the 191 major leisure facilities nationwide including theme parks, aquariums, and zoos, plan to raise admission fees this year. This follows last year, when 37% raised prices, continuing the upward trend.

The firm analyzed that rising operating costs such as labor and electricity are the biggest factors. It also explained that the price increases are growing larger as variable pricing systems designed to manage peak-season demand rapidly spread. The average top price of free passes at major theme parks was tallied at 5,033 yen, exceeding 5,000 yen for the first time since the survey began in 2022.

Tokyo Disney Resort has raised its top ticket price six times since 2019, and the seventh hike will happen this October. The company confirmed that the maximum price for an adult one-day ticket is climbing from 10,900 yen to 12,400 yen, a 13.8% jump. The Tokyo Disneyland ticket price increase won’t affect every visitor equally. Oriental Land’s variable pricing model only pushes tickets to their new 12,400 yen ceiling on the busiest dates — holidays, long weekends and seasonal events. Most calendar days will stay well under that number.

The new pricing reflects both the value of new attractions like Fantasy Springs, which opened in 2024, and the escalating costs of running world-class theme parks in an inflationary environment. For international visitors, particularly from India and other Asian markets, the cumulative effect of these price hikes across multiple attractions could significantly impact travel budgets for Japan vacations.

Tour operators and travel agencies are already advising customers to book tickets in advance and consider visiting during off-peak periods to minimize costs. The variable pricing system, while designed to manage crowd levels, means that strategic planning can still result in substantial savings for budget-conscious travelers.

Japan’s leading theme parks are raising ticket prices one after another, increasing the burden on tourists planning trips to the country.
