The rally was held on July 24, 2026, and moved from Sealdah towards Dharmatala as participants protested over the alleged NEET question-paper leak and demanded accountability from the Union government. After the photograph circulated widely online, BJP spokesperson Keya Ghosh submitted a complaint at Anandapur Police Station, while similar complaints were reportedly lodged at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station and in other districts. The complainants described the poster as objectionable and disrespectful and demanded legal action against the actor, arguing that political disagreement and peaceful protest do not give participants the right to deliberately insult a public figure or circulate material capable of disturbing public order. Reports said the complaints referred to provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning intentional insult, statements allegedly contributing to public mischief and defamation. However, the legal status of the matter requires careful distinction: the submission or acceptance of a police complaint does not automatically mean that an FIR has been registered, that criminal charges have been proven or that the person named in the complaint has committed an offence. Reports available at the time indicated that police had received the complaints but had not yet registered an FIR. Responding to the controversy, Mitra denied intentionally choosing or displaying the poster and rejected attempts to describe her as anti-national. She said she had joined the rally to stand with students, was moving through the crowd when another person handed her the placard and was not wearing the prescription glasses she uses for reading. According to her explanation, she had only sunglasses with her and did not examine the illustration properly before being photographed. She also said police action and confusion during the demonstration contributed to the hurried circumstances in which the picture was taken. Mitra acknowledged that she may politically oppose the BJP but said this should not be interpreted as hostility towards the country or as proof that she deliberately intended to insult the Prime Minister. BJP representatives remained unconvinced by the explanation and called for her arrest, saying that public personalities must take responsibility for the messages and images they display at political events. The controversy has consequently developed into a larger debate involving artistic freedom, political criticism, personal responsibility and the legal limits placed on expression during public protests. Satire and caricature have long formed part of political commentary, but whether a particular image crosses the line into punishable insult, defamation or provocation depends on its exact content, surrounding circumstances, intention and the legal standards applied by investigators and courts. A viral photograph alone may not provide complete evidence of how the poster reached Mitra, whether she understood its content or what intention she had when holding it. Until police complete their assessment and formally announce whether an FIR or further proceedings will follow, the allegations against the actor remain unproven. The episode also demonstrates how a single image from a crowded public protest can rapidly become detached from its original context and transformed into a national political controversy through social-media circulation.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra has become the centre of a political and legal controversy after a photograph showed her holding a poster containing a caricature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a student demonstration in Kolkata.
