For the first time, an Indian other than Viswanathan Anand will compete in the World Chess Championship, the most prestigious title in chess. Anand, a five-time world champion, last played in the title match ten years ago, losing to Magnus Carlsen in Sochi, Russia.
Carlsen, who held the world title for nearly a decade, dominated the chess world until he decided to step away from the championship matches, citing the intense preparation they required. His reign ended unbeaten, leaving the spot open for other contenders.
